Chanting

Most of our regular classes, including postnatal, pregnancy and children's sessions all incorporate some element of practice with the yoga of sound, using hummming, mantras and the resonance of the body to create a variety of different sounds.

The practice of chanting is especially beneficial during pregnancy, when the sounds of the mother's voice are experienced by the baby in the womb as a form of 'sound massage'.

There is a group of local friends and students who gather in our yoga space periodically to explore this aspect of yoga further.

The sessions are informal and friendly. We chant mantras, and sacred slokas (verses) from the vedas. We also sing kirtans (simple devotional call-and-response verses, mostly from the Hindu tradition). As well as voices, we are accompanied by harmonium, bells, shakers, and drums.

Everything we sing is simple, and the chants are easy to pick up. If you are interested in these gatherings, please call to find out when the next session is planned.

Yoga Sutras Study and Chanting

The Diamond Mind - Patanjali's Yoga Sutras Chapter 1

Following a wonderful Yoga Sutras evening with Chris Preist earlier this, year, we are delighted to announce his return for:

An Evening of Yoga Sutra chanting, study and meditation

Thursday December 14th, 7.00 - 9.30

In this evening workshop, we will chant sections from chapter 1 of the yoga sutras. We will look at Patanjali's teaching on how we can focus our minds and the different states of clarity we can reach. We will do this using 12 key ideas from chapter 1, and see how the threads elegantly weave together. We will look at how we can make use of these ideas to improve the quality of our daily lives.

Venue: Sitaram Yoga Centre, 7 Holmewood Gardens, Brixton Hill, London SW2 3RS

Cost: £16 if prepaid; £20 on the night

Meditation

We teach simple and effective techniques for increasing awareness. Breath, body awareness and visualisation practices are at the core of a range of different approaches to yogic meditation.

These practices are taught as an integral part of many of the regular classes, but are also offered in special sessions that can be arranged to meet the needs of individual students.

Often it works well to learn the most appropriate practices in a one-on-one session. Call Nirlipta to arrange a mutually convenient appointment.
