Information
on the Early Years training course
Children are natural born yogis. Their spontanaeity, flexibility and energy are inspirational and sometimes challenging for parents. In the yoga classes for children from ages three to nine we offer the chance for parents and children to do yoga together. This is, for the younger children in the class, a great introduction to yoga: doing it alongside mum, dad or older sibling.
Each week we follow a story, or travel on an imaginary adventure to meet jungle animals, magical mountains and deep sea creatures. Sometimes the class tokes the form of a game, with different postures and shapes to remember. We use rhythm and movement to tell the story, and there is always some quiet and relaxing practice, as well as breathing and chanting at the end of the class.
The classes are great fun for parents and children, but there is a lot more to it than that. Yoga practice promotes good co-ordination and balance, it develops strength, agility and flexibility. Yoga can also improve concentration. and encourage clarity of mental focus. The imaginative tales are an opportunity for children to let their creative abilities flourish.
Relaxation practices can promote periods of calm and tranquility, and help parents and children learn to relax in each others' presence.
During the summer months, Sitaram takes its unique blend of kids and family yoga sessions out of Brixton, and sets up camp in a variety of festival locations to enjoy yoga in the open air. The Santosa Pan-Yoga Gathering (Aug 23-28) is fmaily family friendly and there will be lots of children's and family yoga classes. We'll also be at the Lambeth County Fair (July 15th-16th) - we'll be there to talk about the family yoga provision, and do some informal mini taster sessions with anyone who comes along.
Our weekly regular session for families is at Brockwell Lido on Wednesdays 4.30pm - 5.15pm during term time only.
