Perinatal hypnotherapy

Perinatal hypnotherapy is a specialised application of clinical hypnosis for the perinatal period, including issues around fertiity and conception, right through to the postnatal period. Because every attempt at conception, and every pregnancy (whether the first, or the fourth or the fifth), and the postnatal recovery of every woman are all unique, perinatal hypnotherapy offers and approach tailored to the needs of individual clients. It provides a sensitive and empathetic approach which encourages this special period in life to be cherished an honoured.

There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach, no group work, and no encouragement of unrealistic expectations. What happens is that at the initial meeting, a detailed case history is taken, and a therapeutic approach is decided upon in relation to individual circumstances and needs. For example, a woman who is 39 and a half weeks into her pregnancy will have a different set of needs than a woman who is 14 weeks pregnant. Every approach offered is done so on the basis of how effective it will be for that particular individual: there is no dogma or rigid programme to follow: instead the most useful and effective route is chosen to suit the client. This is precious, valuable time that is too brief to accommodate mistakes. So, together, we do what works.

What hypnotherapy is not

There are many misconceptions about hypnotherapy. Clinical hypnotherapy is not to be confused with stage hypnosis. Personality changes don't happen through clinical hypnotherapy. Hypnosis is not a state of sleep, although it is often described as sleep-like. Clients sometimes think that hypnotherapy is a battle of wills: but no-one can be force to go into trance. Clients may think that their will power is not strong enough to bring about changes through hypnosis - but imagination is stronger than will-power, and it is the imagination which is stimulated through hypnotherapy. Clients sometimes have a fear that they will be dominated in hypnosis - but hypnotherapy actually gives the client more control. The one purpose of the unconscious mind is to protect the client. If something is inappropriate, the unconscious rejects it.

What hypnotherapy is

Clinical hypnotherapy is a psychotherapeutic approach. Clinical hypnotherapists have the same ethical code of conduct as psychotherapists.

Clinical hypnotherapy works by communicating directly with the unconscious mind, which may be regarded as the store-room of the mind. There are certain triggers which bring items stored there into consciousness. When a client consults a hypnotherapist for help with any specific goal or difficulty, then the premise is that the cause of the problem is in the mind, and that the mind has the solution to the problems. Hypnotherapy can access the solution to the problems, often by-passing the conscious mind and communicating directly with the unconscious mind, which is what effects change.

Nirlipta's hypnotherapeutic approach is rooted in the understanding that the problem itself presents the solution. The hypnotherapist's job is to remind the client consciously, but more often unconsciously, of the client's own innate wisdom and how to access it. Because the unconscious mind is there to protect the individual, many of its latent capabilities can be deliberately activated, and applied, for example, directly to pregnancy and labour through the creation of feelings of safety and security, or accessing states of deep rest or heightened sensitivity.

Above all, in hypnotherapy the client is always in control and the hypnotherapist is the facilitator.
